as well as the local organising committee of
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) invite to
the 6th Joint International Symposium on Deformation
Monitoring (JISDM) in Karlsruhe, Germany, 7 – 9
April, 2025.
JISDM is dedicated to the latest developments in the field of
deformation measurements and deformation analysis and brings
together experts from the wide range of geodetic fields like
photogrammetry, remote sensing, engineering geodesy and higher
geodesy as well as from neighbouring fields at the interface of
deformation monitoring.
Contributions may deal with the broad spectrum of deformation
measurement and analysis. Hence, papers should present scientific
aspects or applications regarding the deformation monitoring of
natural objects and man-made structures. The individual
presentations may be focused on pure theory, on practical aspects or
on both.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following
subject areas:

Applications

meeting of Commission 6 was held as part of the
technical programme. Chair of the commission, Werner

Chair Elect of Commission 6, the elected Chair Elect term as
the Chair of the Commission will be initiated at the FIG
Congress 2022 for the period 2023-2026.

During the conference days a range of articles
highlighting the hot-topics, the ground breaking
research, and the hidden gems in the proceedings was
published.
The diversity and quality of the communications
gathered at FIG Working Week 2020 prove, once again,
the event’s importance for the community of
professionals. The six technical sessions of
commission 6, are no exception and showcase the
diversity of domains in which the professionals
work, domains which generate many varied problems,
yet which also present techniques that allow for an
advance in quality, efficiency, and productivity.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we
announce the cancellation of this year’s FIG Working
Week in Amsterdam due 10-14 May.
This is not a decision we have taken lightly and there are two
overriding concerns that have caused us to make this decision at this
time.
First, the Dutch Government announced new measurements to control the
COVID-19 outbreak. In the Netherlands all gatherings are prohibited until
1 June.
Second, our primary concern is always the wellbeing of you, and we
would not take on the responsibility, during these times, to bring so many
surveyors from all over the world together.
The General Assembly has been cancelled and
postponed to 2021.
FIG Working Week 2020 and FIG Commission

The theme Smart Surveyors for Land and
Water Management is both relevant in a
world where drinking water is a scarce resource,
waste water needs to be recycled rather than seen as
waste, where the sea needs to be better mapped and
managed, where land resources need to be protected
against sea-level rise, and where land-based fresh
water habitats are threatened.
Commission 6 is making a survey of open-access documents available on
the internet with procedures for checking or testing instruments and
ancillary equipment, currently used by surveying engineers. The
information is being gathered here.

Working Group 6.1 - organized the 4th Joint International Symposium on
Deformation Monitoring (JISDM). This was held in Athens, Greece, from the
15th to the 17th of May. With more than 200 participants coming from all
continents, this symposium can be considered to be a real success.
The joint symposium was organized by the School of Rural and Surveying
Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and was
supported by FIG, IAG and ISPRS. The president of the local organizing
committee was Vassilis Gikas, the co-chair of the WG6.1.
4th Joint International Symposium on Deformation Monitoring participants
The three keynote speakers - Carmelo Gentile, Charalampos (Haris)
Kontoes and Dorota A. Grejner-Brzezinska - introduced the latest
tendencies in the field of deformation monitoring and shared their vision
on the evolution of technologies and methods for monitoring both natural
phenomena and man-made structures.
A total of 132 presentations (95 oral and 37 poster) covered several
topics that included:
quality control, quality assurance and optimization techniques in
deformation analysis;
point cloud-based space-temporal deformations;
reference frames and geodynamics;
cultural heritage/ bridge /
dam / geohazards monitoring;
multi-sensor systems and new concepts for deformation
measurements;
UAV for change detection and deformation monitoring.
Special issues of the Journal of Applied Geodesy (De Gruyter), of the
Journal of Applied Geomatics (Springer) and of the Journal Sensors (MDPI),
that will include an extension of selected articles presented at the
symposium, are in progress.
In the closing session the chair of the WG6.1, Wolfgang Niemeier, made
a short report of the event and announced that the next JISDM, the 5th,
will take place in Valencia, Spain, in 2022.

Maria Henriques, chair of Commission 6, had a meeting with
Gilbert Ferhat, chair of the WG 6.3 - Landslides Monitoring, at
INSA (National Institute of Applied Sciences) of Strasbourg, to
programme the activities of the Working Group until 2022.
The Working Week took place in Hanoi, Vietnam
22-26 April 2019. Commission 6 held its yearly meeting and was
involved in several sessions covering the commission 6 areas.
Geo PreVi 2018 Symposium “Geodesy for Smart Cities” has taken
place in Bucharest, Romania, 29-30 October. The technical
program was mainly organized by help of FIG Commissions 5, 6 and
10 dealing with Positioning and Measurement, Engineering Geodesy

Dear Delegate of Commission 6 - Engineering Surveys
This year the International Conference on Engineering Surveying
(INGEO2017) will be held once again. It will be the 7th. The longevity of
this event shows the importance of the theme - monitoring and safety
evaluation of civil engineering structures - in our professional group.
INGEO has been, since its beginning, organized by the Department of
Surveying of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Slovak University of
Technology with close cooperation and support from FIG Commission 6. In
2017 INGEO will be organized together with the National Laboratory for
Civil Engineering (LNEC) from Portugal. For this reason, INGEO2017 brings
together two communities: surveyors and civil engineers.
The theme of the event “Monitoring: Needs and Solutions” expresses the
need of the joining, in one event, the two communities. In INGEO2017, we,
the producers (surveyors, geographical engineers and other specialist in
geospatial measuring techniques applied to monitoring) can meet the users
of our information: the civil engineers. In fact, civil engineers
responsible by the security of structures like buildings, dams, bridges,
tunnels, power plants and power distribution infrastructures, breakwaters,
roads, slopes, etc., want to know more about the state of the art but also
new geospatial measuring techniques. Finally, displacements, vibrations,
images etc. are data that the responsible by structures must have to
follow the behaviour of structures and to evaluate their safety. Last but
not least this are Data obtained with technology that we dominate and also
that we improve to meet the requirements of our clients for accuracy and
reliability.
Being sure that INGEO2017 will be an important event to our community,
let us meet next October, from 18th to 20th, in Lisbon, at the Congress

2010, imposes many challenges to surveyors.
The First International FIG Workshop on High Rise and
Tall Engineering Structures, organised jointly by the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics
(LSGI), the FIG Commission 6 ?Engineering Surveys?, WG 6.2 ?Engineering

INGEO 2008 - 4th International Conference on Engineering Surveying
was devoted to the 70th Anniversary of the Faculty of Civil Engineering
of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The conference was
co-organised by FIG Commission 6.
The 12th FIG Symposium on Deformation Measurement
and the 3rd IAG Symposium for Geotechnical and Structural
Engineering was held in Baden, Austria 22-24 May 2006.
The 3rd International Conference on Engineering
Surveying INGEO 2004 was held November 11-13 in Bratislava,
Slovakia. INGEO 2004 was organised by FIG Commission 6 and
Department of Surveying, SUT, Bratislava, Slovakia. 39 papers were
presented and representatives from more than 15 countries
participated in this well organized event.
The 1st International
Symposium on Engineering Surveys for Construction Works and
Structural Engineering organised by FIG Commission 6 was held in
Nottingham, United Kingdom, 28 June – 1 July 2004. The Symposium was
hosted by the Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy,
University of Nottingham. It included a workshop of the Special Task
Force 6.1.1 established under Working Group 6.1, “Measurements and
Analysis of Cyclic Deformations and Structural Vibrations”.

The 11th FIG Symposium on Deformation Measurement was held in
Santorini, Greece May 25-28, 2003. This symposium organised by FIG
Commission 6 (surveying Engineering) working group on Deformation
Measurement has the longest tradition in FIG as a Commission
organised event on a certain topic. This time this symposium
attracted more than 130 participants from 29 countries – major
national groups represented were Polish, Italian and, of course,
Greek. Participation of more than 15 delegates, among them students
and scientists from less developed countries became possible through
grants from the sponsors of the symposium.

Adam Chrzanowski, Xiaoli Ding, Gethin Roberts
and Cecilia Whitaker have prepared a document on the activities
of FIG Working Group 6.1 on Deformation Measurements which dates back
to 1975 when the first FIG international symposium on deformation
measurements was held in Krakow, Poland. The main goals of WG 6.1 are:
dissemination of knowledge on new developments in deformation
monitoring and analysis and stimulation of international co-operation
in solving specific (ad hoc) problems related to deformation
measurements. The dissemination of knowledge is achieved by organising
international symposia and technical sessions at FIG Congresses
related to deformation measurements. Since 1975, WG6.1 has organised
eleven international symposia in Poland, Germany, Hungary, Canada,
Hong Kong, USA, and Greece.
The 2nd International Conference on Engineering
Surveying – INGEO 2002
The 2nd International Conference of Engineering Surveying INGEO 2002
was held in November 11–13, 2002 in the Congress Centrum of Slovak
Savings Bank in Bratislava. The conference was organised by the
Department of Surveying (DS) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FCE)
of the Slovak University of Technology (SUT) in Bratislava under the
auspices of the Dean of the FCE SUT Bratislava, Prof. Dušan Petráš,
PhD.
The co-operation bodies of the conference were:

Chamber of Surveyors and Cartographers
Slovak Union of Surveyors.
Specialists from the 9 various countries in the world, who work at
universities, research centres, in geodetic and building organizations
as well as in industry, have participated in proceedings. Total number
of participants was 76, out of which 36 participants were from foreign
countries and 40 participants from Slovak Republic.
Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference of Engineering
Surveying was aimed at a discussion about actual problems of engineering
surveying, about conclusion of knowledge and results, which were
acquired by the using of new modern technologies.
The individual sessions of proceedings were following:
Session 1: Model Building and Data Processing
Session 2: Deformation Measurement
Session 3: Photogrammetry Applications
Session 4: Sensors and Laser Equipments
Twenty-nine papers were presented during the conference. Papers were
top up with the various contributions during discussion by many
participants. The conference languages were English, Slovak and Czech.
Discussion was ensured with the simultaneous translation. A proceeding
from this conference was issued in English language in Edition of SUT
Bratislava. There was also published a CD ROM where you can find the
complete proceeding and also some more information about the Department
of Surveying, which organised this conference. Content of the CD ROM and

Program of the conference was completed by an exhibition of measuring
and computer techniques and software products developed for engineering
surveying activities, monitoring of building structures and automated
measuring systems. Main motive of the exhibition was emphasized by the
participation of the laser terrestrial scanners (LTS) from Geotech
Company Bratislava with the cooperation of Gefos Company Prague and
Riegl Horn Company Austria. LTS was possible to see for the first time
in Slovakia. LTS Cyrax (Leica) and LMS-Z360 (Riegl) belong to the best
one in the world.
Organizing Committee prepared two daylong excursions:
Excursion to the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Slovak
University of Technology in Bratislava,
Excursion to the Gabčíkovo Hydro Electric Power Station (HEPS).
Participants of the excursion to the FCE SUT Bratislava were welcomed
by prof. Dušan Petráš, PhD. – Dean of the Faculty, who described a
historical development of FCE SUT Bratislava, its nowadays structure and
actual problems. During the visiting of the departments, which ensure
education of students in Geodesy and Cartography, the participants were
familiar with a structure of the student programs, research and
expertise activity of the each department.
The aim of the excursion to the Gabčíkovo HEPS was to present,
especially to the foreign participants, a complex of the hydro-technique
structures with the emphasis to the engineering-geodetic works realized
in the past and also during present days. The participants’ interest was
aimed at the automated measured systems realizing monitoring of the
selected structures of the Gabčíkovo HEPS. One part of the excursion was
also the presentation of activities of the Department of Surveying of
FCE SUT Bratislava on the Gabčíkovo HEPS. The participants of this
excursion were allowed to look over some students’ works, which present
the results from every year practical exercises (Engineering Surveying
Campus) of the 5th class students in Gabčíkovo HEPS.
Chairmen of the individual sessions defined conclusions and
recommendations of the international conference INGEO 2002:
in the area of the Model Building and Data Processing there will
be often more used a Theory of the Robust Estimations,
new processes of the refraction coefficient determination
presented on the conference can evoke a development of the instruments
with the automated correction of the refraction in a measurement
process,
CCD sensors and the technologies working on a CCD base became a
main technologies also in engineering surveying, in the future it is
expecting the strong influence of these technologies on the
measurement systems development,
the most productive technology for data acquisition in surveying
will be LTS together with aerial scanners, their exploitation enable
to create a spatial (3D) information systems (including 3D Cadastre),
exploitation of the roboting measurement stations (RMS) in an area
of cinematic applications (e.g. dynamic loading of the construction)
needs to determine the new characteristics for RMS, this is possible
to determine e.g. with help of the dynamic tests presented on the
conference.
