Dear Colleague,
We are getting closer to this years main event - the FIG Working Week
2023. If you have not yet registered, make sure you do so before the
fee increases. You should also secure your hotel room now - the local
organisers have negotiated a very good rate, but this will expire after
20 April, and accommodation fee will hereafter be at market price.
The technical programme is also shaping up - there will be up to 10
parallel sessions in 9 session slots during the three conference days
29-31 May. Through the power of storytelling, this year will also
include a Cinema track which aims to inspire and empower participants.

For FIG members and observers the General Assembly will take place on
28 May and 1 June. Agenda and more information will be sent out to
members in April.
March also means "Global Surveyors Day". The day, 21 March, was
celebrated around the World - we have resumees of events from Mongolia
and Hungary, and FIG President Diane Dumashie attended the celebration
in Paris organised by the French Organisations together with FGF.

Technical programme
The three plenary sessions will be the highlight of the technical programme of the FIG Working Week. These highlevel presentations and panel discussions will cover topics within the overall theme “Protecting our World, Conquering New Frontiers”.

PROTECTING OUR WORLD
This first plenary session will have the relationship between climate
change and sustainable development on the agenda.The climate focus is now
the foundation of sustainability and underpins everything we do in our
professional work. Unpacked by key note speakers they will relate this to
land and the role surveyor’s can lead in land management, land
administration and geospatial context that enables us to understand how we
can take urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs
of the present and future generations.

CONQUERING NEW FRONTIERS
Mankind has forever embarked on progressing
through and finding new frontiers. Our professional members throughout
the generations are no different - we were all the future at one
time. Interpretations of the new frontiers from our key note speakers
are considering smarter working in digital transformation and impact of
geospatial infrastructure, space research and development In addition,
hearing perspectives from our young surveyors in relation to what this
means them, and what it means to be at the forefront of the current
generational frontier as well as upcoming generations yet to choose
surveying as their profession.

TACKLING THE GLOBAL CHALLENGES
Surveyors have much to contribute in society and to
highlight, advocate and above all act to ensure change that builds on a
sustainability agenda. In this plenary our key note speakers will elaborate
further on selected challenges that is at the forefront of thinking and
highlighted in some of the FIG commission working groups. Driven by the need
for sustainable development and fit for the future, this includes: an
introduction to the new Reference Frame system/Datum that is being
introduced in the US and which is leading up to a special National Geodetic
Survey Day/Track (NGS); Disaster responsiveness highlighting the
sustainability of island states given the challenges that the Small Islands
are facing (which will also be a special topic in the technical sessions);
and technological sustainable applications for the development of urban
areas.
The
draft technical
programme is available on the web site. Authors will be informed soon
about their paper.
Unique venue
The conference centre is located in the Disney area. Having both accommodation and conference venue under the same roof is a great benefit to the conference participants.
The conference centre is located between the two hotels Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek and Waldorf Astoria Orlando. This means that you do not need any kind of transportation to the venue and it is easy to get around the compound.
Please ensure your hotel room - there are not that many, and our local organisers have negotiated a really good fee for the stay of our participants. Please note that the rate includes the Disney Resort Fee that it otherwise always added to all rooms and represents a fee of USD 45 per day.
The guaranteed room rate will expire by 20 April, so secure your room now. Hereafter the room rate will be at market price.
Apart from the conference programme there is plenty to see and do in and
around Orlando.

Global Surveyors Day: FIG President Diane Dumashie invited by FGF to attend the 2023 Global Surveyors' celebrations in Paris

FGF President Marc Vanderschueren (The Federation of French
Speaking Surveyors) invited FIG President Diane Dumashie to attend
the 2023 celebration of Global Surveyors Day held in Paris. To mark
2023 Global Surveyors Day, FGF nominated two French mathematicians
and astronomers, Jean-Baptiste Joseph Delambre (1749-
1822)astronomer, historian, and geodesist and Pierre François André
Méchain (1744- 1804).
