COMMISSION 5 - POSITIONING AND MEASUREMENT

The year 2000 has been a busy year for FIG Commission 5. The commission has been involved in many different tasks including preparing several seminars, active in the ISO work, maintaining a home page a producing a Newsletter. The Commission has five working groups and all of them have been active. We are all well prepared for the last year with a lot of interesting and hard work to be done. Below are all the activities summarised:

  • Permanently updating the Commission homepage on Internet. The home page has the following address: http://www.lm.se/fig5. The homepage presents e.g. Commission 5, the activities of the different working groups and future related meetings to Commission 5.
  • Creation and distribution of the third number of FIG Commission 5 Newsletter. In the Newsletter we presented some thoughts concerning the relationship between FIG and international organisations as IAG, some reports from meetings were Commission 5 were involved as well as we promoted several other events were the Commission were planning to be involved. The fourth number to be ready in March, 2001.
  • Commission 5 continues to be active within ISO standardisation works. Jean-Marie Becker, Chair of Commission 5 is working as FIG Liaison for ISO. FIG Commission 5 has been involved especially in ISO TC172 (Optics and Optical Instruments). Prof. Becker was for example involved at the meeting in Heerbrugg in May.
  • Working Group meetings for working groups 5.1, 5.2 and 5.5 took place in Prague at FIG Working Week where all the officers of FIG Commission 5 were present.
  • Organising and contributing to the International Course on Engineering Surveying in Munich 13-17 of March, 2000. This work is mainly done through WG5.1 and Hansbert Heister and his collaborators.
  • The Steering Committee of the Commission had a meeting in Prague during the FIG Working Week.
  • The commission was very active in several seminars. Among them we can mention that the commission had several papers at FIG Working Week in Prague. We should also mention the jointly organised seminar by several of the commissions that was held in Malta in September, 2000. A lot of effort from especially Jean-Marie Becker and Mikael Lilje, Secretary of Commission 5 was put into the organisation of the technical program since the commission was responsible of the technical program. A special report from the seminar has been prepared and published through FIG.
  • Working Group 5.3 through its chair Naser El-Sheimy was responsible for the seminar 3rd International Seminar on Mobile Mapping that was held in Cairo in the beginning of 2001. This was a joint seminar between FIG, IAG and ISPRS.
  • Mikael Lilje represented FIG Commission 5 at the IAG Symposium on Vertical Reference Systems in Cartagena, Colombia in February, 2001.
  • We are also working hard with the preparation with other seminars during 2001 and we can especially mention FIG Working Week in Seoul, KIS 2001 in Banff, Canada and 5th Conference on Optical 3-D Measurement Techniques in Vienna in October.
